LONGi-Latest UN Report: Aggravated Global Climate Change Calls for Urgent Need to Reduce Carbon Emissions
The year 2021 is the "hottest year in history". In 2021, the national average temperature was 10.53℃, 1.0℃ higher than that in previous years and the highest since 1951.
Recently, the China Climate Bulletin (2021) issued by China Meteorological Administration expressly states that China showed a significant warm and wet climate feature in 2021, more obvious waterlogging than drought, and frequent, intense, extensive and coexisting occurrence of extreme weather and climate events, reflecting a pessimistic climatic situation.
On the day before the publication of the China Climate Bulletin (2021), the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) of the United Nations (UN) warned that if global warming exceeds 1.5℃, it will generate an irreversible impact.
The IPCC, established in 1988, as an authoritative international organization to assess the science related to climate change, published five assessment reports previously. In the latest Climate Change 2022: Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability, the IPCC made an in-depth analysis on a series of issues such as the impact of the climate crisis, how human beings adapt to the climate crisis and how to reduce carbon emissions.
Even though the overall situation is not promising, the report denotes that "a livable future is still under control": if countries immediately reduce carbon emissions on a large scale, there is still a great chance for human society to control the temperature increase within 1.5℃ by the end of this century, thereby preventing the further aggravation of extreme weather events.
Also, Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) argued that the latest report issued by the IPCC is regarded as "the last appeal for decarbonization", and that strong, rapid and sustained global carbon emission reduction will be beneficial to mitigating the disaster impact caused by climate change.
"That's why the IPCC emphasizes that enterprises, governments and society shall promote climate action to a new level through close cooperation among various parties, thus building a sustainable and resilient future." In an article published on its official website, SBTi contends that enterprises with scientific objectives have demonstrated that carbon emission reduction in line with climate science can be realized and beneficial to the sustainable development of enterprises.
As early as 2016, LONGi embarked on a journey of zero-carbon development. In 2018, LONGi officially put forward the development concept of "Solar for Solar" at the 24th United Nations Climate Change Conference. In 2020, LONGi successively joined RE100, EP100, EV100 and SBTi, with a view to promoting zero-carbon development through green energy. In 2021, LONGi successively built its first "zero-carbon plant" and released its 2021 Climate Actions of LONGi.
According to LI Zhenguo, Founder and President of LONGi, "Enterprises shall first practice what is beneficial to human beings and the earth, and then take into account the interests of customers, employees and stakeholders. Only in this way can enterprises achieve more long-term development."
At the present stage, building a sustainable future has evolved into a global consensus. In this context, LONGi expects to expand the application scope and scenarios of PV power through continuous scientific and technological innovation, thereby promoting the transformation of global energy.
As the world's leading solar energy technology company, LONGi not only proactively implements the requirements of the national strategic goals of carbon peak and carbon neutrality but also innovatively practices the advanced concept of "making clean energy with clean energy" in the PV industry while continuously creating clean energy for the whole world.
In addition to manufacturing, LONGi proactively promotes the green development of the supply chain and cooperates with diversified parties including suppliers, manufacturers, logistics providers, vendors and customers to effectively manage the green attributes of products.
In accordance with the 2021 Climate Actions of LONGi, it is indicated that LONGi is actively fulfilling its commitments to promote the practical implementation of the four international initiatives, making remarkable progress. Specifically, LONGi completed the accounting and verification of greenhouse gas emissions in the whole value chain for the first time. In 2020, the utilization ratio of renewable electricity was as high as 41.83%, which was equivalent to a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions of 1.35 million tons of carbon dioxide. Five factories of LONGi located in Yunnan Province have achieved 100% utilization of renewable electricity. More importantly, according to the standard of SBTi, LONGi put forward the emission reduction target of the enterprise for the first time, that is, based on 2020, the greenhouse gas emissions within the operating range will decrease by 60% in 2030, and the carbon emission intensity of each ton of silicon material, each watt of cell and each ton of glass purchased in 2030 will decrease by 20% compared with that in 2020.
For a long time, LONGi has been firmly committed to transforming wafers, modules and power stations into "a model in line with the green concept" and "a blue ocean guided by sustainable initiatives" through solar energy technology, thus continuously bringing green changes to the earth. In the future, LONGi will continue to adhere to low-carbon and green development and build a beautiful vision of "Solar for Solar", with a view to making due contributions to the global response to climate change with practical actions.
