Xi’an, China, November 22, 2023 - During the 6th China International PV Industry Conference held in Chengdu last week, Dr Martin Green, Professor at the University of New South Wales, shared his insights in a media interview, recognising China’s global leadership in solar technology – “China is definitely leading the world (in solar)" – and its ability to efficiently produce solar cells.

Dr Green went on to express his belief that IBC (Interdigitated Back Contact) technology will ultimately dominate the industry landscape - "IBC technology will win eventually" – while acknowledging uncertainty as to the speed of its industry-wide adoption. "Whether all companies will switch in 5 years or whether it'll take longer, I'm not too sure, but I think everyone will eventually be manufacturing IBC cells."

LONGi aligns itself with Dr Green’s prediction for the technology’s trajectory, anticipating the rise of Back Contact cells to become the main choice of the PV sector over the coming 5-6 years, redefining the industry landscape with a combination of high efficiency and aesthetics.

The company’s breakthrough comes in the form of its proprietary HPBC (Hybrid Passivated Back Contact) solar cell, an alternative BC technology that introduces unobstructed front shading by metal contacts. This pioneering approach optimizes photon collection, resulting in enhanced conversion efficiency and, developed over an extended period by the LONGi scientific team, the technology has now achieved commercial viability.

The HPBC cell sets a new industry standard, with a mass production conversion efficiency exceeding 25%. Leveraging optimized structural design of devices, the technology significantly enhances light absorption and photovoltaic conversion capability, resulting in substantially improved module power output. The Hi-MO X6 module already achieves an impressive average conversion efficiency in mass production of up to 23.3%.

As further proof of its technological expertise, LONGi has also recently achieved a groundbreaking 33.9% efficiency record for crystalline silicon-perovskite tandem cells, surpassing the previous record of 33.7% set by Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah University of Science & Technology (KAUST).

Dr. Green was generous in his praise of this landmark, adding: "China now holds the world record for the more innovative perovskite cells, meaning that the country’s laboratories not only lead in current mainstream technology, but are also well placed to be at the forefront of future developments."
